Congressional candidate Pat Miles released his tax returns and charitable giving information along with his voting record in order to be transparent to the voters of the 3rd Congressional District.
The Miles campaign is calling on Justin Amash to release his tax returns from 2008 and 2009, list his charitable contributions for the same period, and share his voting record in federal, state, and school primary, general, and special elections over the past 10 years.
Miles campaign spokesperson Amy Fetherolf said, "Transparency and accountability to the community are more than posting comments on Facebook to fans who think alike and mostly live outside West Michigan. It is showing where your money comes from and being an active participant in the West Michigan community through giving back of time, treasure, and talents as well as being a responsible citizen and voting in federal, state, and school elections, not just when you're running for office. Additionally, when challenged to divest his ownership of a Chinese company, Justin Amash refused to respond to reporters who asked him questions about it. He literally ran away from them.”
Fetherolf continued, "Pat Miles is a community leader whose work and contributions over the past two decades demonstrate he cares deeply about the people and institutions of West Michigan. He will continue that stewardship in Congress by taking West Michigan values to Washington.”
Miles has given substantially to different charities and organizations, including more than $30,000 in 2008 and more than $20,000 in 2009. Four years ago he established a scholarship at Aquinas College for outstanding minority students pursuing an education and career in education or business in honor of his parents, Patrick Sr. and Shirley L. Miles.
The charities he's given to in 2008 and 2009 include Aquinas College, DeVos Childrens' Hospital Foundation, Grand Rapids Christian Church, Grand Rapids Community College, Great Lakes Christian College, Hope Network Foundation, Inner-City Christian Federation, Leukemia Society, United Way, Greater Grand Rapids YMCA, and YWCA. Full summaries of his tax returns and charitable giving are attached.
Since graduating from Harvard Law School in 1991 and returning home to Grand Rapids, Miles has worked tirelessly in the West Michigan community for a variety of charities and professional associations. For example he served on the board of Inner-City Christian Federation from 1996-2000, and was board chairman from 1998-2000. He was chairman of the Grand Rapids Bar Association Diversity Committee from 1997-2001, elected as a Grand Rapids Bar Association Trustee in 1999, and was elected president of the Grand Rapids Bar Association in 2002. He has served on the Aquinas College Board of Trustees since 1993 and was Chairman of the Board from 2004-2008. Some of his community and board service includes Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Foundation, Greater Grand Rapids YMCA, Hope Network, and Arbor Circle.
Over the past 10 years, Miles has voted in every single federal, state and school general, primary, or special election.
