Detroit Free Press Endorses Pat Miles for CongressFriday, October 15th, 2010
The Detroit Free Press endorsed Pat Miles for Congress today:
"Republican U.S. Rep. Vern Ehlers' decision to quit Congress after 17 years set up a lively contest to succeed him in the 3rd District, which is anchored by Grand Rapids and, except for a Nixon-related Democratic interlude in the mid-1970s, has been sending moderate Republicans to Washington for six decades."
"The Republican nominee is Justin Amash, a one-term state representative from suburban Cascade Township who turned 30 this spring and declared his candidacy before Ehlers announced his retirement."
"The ambitious, Libertarian-leaning Amash would be far more conservative than Ehlers and his predecessors. From health care reform to bank bailouts and auto industry rescues, he dislikes much of what's going on in Washington, although he doesn't articulate solutions much beyond letting free markets work."
"Democrats nominated Pat Miles, 41, of Grand Rapids, a business lawyer, civic leader and former president of the Grand Rapids Bar Association who's making his first run for office. Miles is a well-studied candidate who has more specific ideas about what he'd do in Washington, starting with expanding the availability of money for small businesses, which will create most of the new jobs in Michigan. Importantly, he's a career negotiator with years of experience bringing competing sides together in "win-win" solutions."
"Amash is the candidate of the party that generally carries the district, but Miles is more the type of leader district voters have historically chosen. Amash has a solid future in Michigan politics. But Miles has more to offer now. Voters in the 3rd District should elect PAT MILES to Congress."
